When a watering cycle ends, the system does not empty itself. Water stays behind in the supply pipe, in the backflow device, inside every valve, along the buried zone lines, and in the body of each sprinkler head. Water expands as it freezes, and that ice presses outward on plastic fittings, brass bodies, and thin valve diaphragms until something gives.
Our winters bring long stretches below freezing, and frost works down into the soil where the pipe is buried. The parts above ground freeze first. One cold night rarely breaks a system, but a season of freezing and thawing can find any spot where water was left inside. Sprinkler winterization removes that water before the cold arrives.

The system looks fine in December, and the cracked fitting only shows itself in spring, when the water goes back on and a zone will not hold pressure or the lawn turns soggy over a split pipe.

How a sprinkler winterization visit clears each zone

Shut off the water supply
The technician closes the valve that feeds the irrigation system, so no new water can enter while the lines are cleared.

When to schedule sprinkler winterization
The right time is late fall, after the lawn no longer needs regular watering and before the first hard freeze. Go too early and the lawn and beds lose their watering during dry fall weeks. Wait too long and the above-ground parts, the backflow device most of all, can freeze while the system is still full.
An early cold snap can reach anywhere in Southeastern Massachusetts, so it is safer to plan the visit ahead than to wait for the first cold forecast.
Why we advise against a do-it-yourself blowout
Clearing a sprinkler system with air looks simple, and the risk is in the pressure. A small home compressor often cannot move enough air to push water out of a whole zone, so water stays in the low spots. Turned up too high, air can crack fittings, blow heads apart, or damage valves.
Air is also hard on parts when a zone runs dry for too long, and it should never be pushed back through the backflow device. That is why winterization is best left to a technician with equipment made for irrigation lines.
What to expect when we winterize your system
The technician starts by finding the shutoff and the backflow device, then connects the compressor and works through the controller zone by zone. You will hear the compressor running, and you will see the heads in each zone spray water and then a fine mist as that zone clears.
If something looks wrong along the way, such as a head that will not pop up, a zone that is slow to clear, or a leak near the valve box, the technician notes it and lets you know. Those items can be handled at the spring start-up or sooner if they need attention. When the visit ends, the water is off, the lines are clear, and the controller is set for winter.
