Duxbury irrigation rules in plain English
East of Route 3A, homes sit near Snug Harbor off Washington Street and out along Powder Point. West toward Route 3, around Tinkertown, lots are greener, shadier, and closer to the woods. Route 3A, known here as Tremont Street, carries you north into Marshfield and south into Kingston.
Wherever the yard is, one rule shapes the irrigation. On December 16, 2024, the Duxbury Selectboard, acting as the town's Water Commissioners, adopted a regulation for private underground irrigation systems. It applies to every such system in Duxbury and to systems outside town that use Duxbury's water.

Duxbury well and water rule questions
Not while it stays on town water. Under Duxbury's regulation, a system that is enlarged in any way, including more sprinklers, more coverage area, or more volume capacity, loses its grandfathered status and must disconnect from town water and connect to a private well.
It may keep its town water connection as long as it does not grow. The regulation also requires grandfathered systems to be connected to an operational moisture sensor or similar climate-related control technology, installed and working. The deadline for that was April 1, 2025.
The Duxbury Board of Health says irrigation wells need a well construction permit, the same permit used for drinking water wells. It also requires a 100-foot setback between an irrigation well and a septic system.
Yes. The regulation applies in addition to any current or future outdoor watering restrictions, and the town has banned nonessential outdoor water use during drought. The Water and Sewer Department's current notice has the rules in force.
